About

Mission: San Diego Orienteering's mission is to promote and support the sport of orienteering in San Diego County.

History: San Diego Orienteering was created in the 1970s, as part of a nationwide trend to import the Swedish sport from Europe. SDO was founded by Bill Gookin, a local athlete, entrepreneur, and educator. Bill built the club methodically, creating maps and introducing local athletes to our exotic sport. His efforts culminated in 2000, with the inaugural Anza-Borrego (now the "Desert Orienteering Festival"). This multiday event in the stark desert east of San Diego brought world-class orienteering to the region and remains the cornerstone of the SDO calendar. After a brief pandemic hiatus, the club has continued its growth and now hosts monthly events throughout San Diego County, attracting approximately 500 competitors annually.

Status: San Diego Orienteering is a 501c.3 non-profit. All proceeds from events and gear sales are reinvested into the sport of orienteering, including map creation, event gear acquisition, and youth development.
