About
Mission: San Diego Orienteering's mission is to promote and support the sport of orienteering in San Diego County.

History: San Diego Orienteering was created in the 1970s, as part of a nationwide trend to import the Swedish sport from Europe. SDO's was founded by Bill Gookin, a local athlete, entrepreneur and educator. Bill built the club methodically, creating maps and introducing local athletes to our exotic sport. His efforts culminated in 2000, with the inaugural Anza-Borrego (now the "Desert Orienteering Festival"). This multiday event in the stark desert east of San Diego brought world class orienteering to the region and remains the cornerstone of the SDO calendar. After a brief pandemic hiatus, the club has continued its growth and now hosts monthly events throughout San Diego County attracting approximately 500 competitors annually.

Status: San Diego Orienteering is a 501c.3 non-profit. All proceeds from events and gear sales are reinvested into the sport of orienteering, including map creation, event gear acquisition, and youth development.
