Come learn how to create a high-quality orienteering course on a San Diego map!

What is the role of a course setter? 

What is the process of course setting? 

What type of courses should I set? 

What makes a good course leg? 

What is good control placement? 

How do I create control descriptions and print the final maps? 


All attendees should be familiar with the sport of orienteering and be able to complete a non-beginner course. No technical knowledge or competitive level is required. The ideal attendee will have interest in helping SDO set courses. 

Note: This is not a mapping workshop. While basic map corrections will be mentioned, new maps or major map improvements are beyond the scope of this workshop.


Registration: All participants must pre-register. 

Deposit: The workshop is free, but to encourage attendance, all registrants will be asked to pay a $20 deposit. A $20 SDO event coupon will then be provided during the workshop.   

Closes: Registration will close at 10pm on Tuesday, April 30th.

Location: The workshop will occur in room MS 122 on the Mesa Community College campus. 

Parking: Park in this lot. There is no parking enforcement in the evening.

Directions: To get to MS 122, walk northeast 150 meters to the Math Science building western wing. Room MS122 is first floor, northernmost classroom.

  • All volunteers will receive a coupon usable for free entry at this (or another) local event.

  • Most volunteer roles allow you to participate in the day's competition and require no advanced knowledge of the sport.  

  • Please check out details on each volunteer role to find the right one for you.

  • Volunteer roles are not available after registration closes.
