What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is the sport of navigation with map and compass. The object is to run/walk to a series of points shown on a map (like a treasure hunt), choosing routes on and off trails, then getting back to the finish in the shortest amount of time. Orienteering is often called the "thinking sport" because it involves map reading and decision making in addition to a great workout. It's a sport that test both mind and body!

The Event
The 2007 Southern California Junior Orienteering Series consists of 4 orienteering events. Participants are to compete individually to receive points and to be eligible for awards (except children 12 years and under can be shadowed by their parents).
Note: All Junior Orienteering Series Events will use E-Punching.

Whilst shadowing of juniors is allowed we ask that this should be non-active unless the run is subsequently declared non-competitive. Shadowing adult should move approximately 20 m (60 ft) behind the competitor.

Mispunching
Always check the control code before you punch. If you do punch a wrong control, this information will be recorded on your electronic punch card (E-Stick), but you may correct your error by visiting the correct control and finishing the course in the correct order.

Protests
If you feel you have unjustly disqualified, you may protest your disqualification. Simply inform the Junior Orienteering Series Director that you wish to protest and explain why. A jury will be convened to evaluate your protest and arrive at a judgment. All decisions of the jury are final.

Scoring
Individiual Scoring - Your score at each event is based on your time. Boys and girls compete on the same course, but in separate classes and points are calculated for each class separately. Individual results are separated by course and gender. Each person who completes a course in their championship category will receive points based on the following scale:

Points for competitor = 1000 * (Winning Time / Competitor Time)

Series Scoring - At the end of the season, your best 3 scores will be added and the result will be your final season score. Season awards will be given to the three highest-scoring boys and girls in each championship category. Any ties will be broken by comparing 4th score.

Team Scoring - Teams compete (and are scored) regardless of the gender of the competitors. At each event, your school's best 3 individual scores will be added to determine the team score. Each team's 3 best scores for the series will be added to give a series score.

Series awards will be given to the top 3 team on each course. Any ties will be broken by comparing the 4th score.
