O-Meet at Painted Gorge

Print  |  Close Window
Awesome desert scenery, technically challenging courses for all levels to make the drive worth while! Definitely a good preperation for Anza-Borrego O-Fest. This location has intricate terrain with a lot of reentrants and small knolls, but practically no vegetation. Just several ocotillos and few cat claw bushes (and yes, the name fits; you will still want to run around them). Navigation mainly by contours.

Tips Terrain: crusty puffy, soft dirt to pebbly ridges & re-entrants.
Vegetation: very sparse
- While you can do these courses easily in shorts and short sleeves shirts, we recommend good shoes, as part of terrain is rocky and part sandy.
- Suggest that participants carry water.
- Gas, food, restrooms are available at Live Oak Springs (Golden Acorn Casino), Campo & Jacumba turn-offs.
Directions From San Diego go east on I-8, turn north to S-2 (Imperial Hwy). Cross under the I-8 and turn immediately East to S-80 (Old Hwy 8). Go for 4.1 miles, turn left (north) on Painted Gorge Road (on dirt road; watch for ATVs) and go 2.7 miles to "O" bag. Start will be within 150 m.
Course Setter Notes Maps are printed at 1:10,000 with 6 meter contour intervals and is a base map partially field checked by Edwin Gookin with additions placed onto the map by Jan Urban. The map is white but in this case it is completely open. Brown dots portray smaller dry stream beds and in many cases are usable for navigation when mapping is lacking. Blue dashed lines indicate larger stream beds but are definitely not wet. Large sandy wash is in yellow. Power lines and poles are fairly accurate to use for navigation references. Dashed black lines are ATV routes. Many more tracks and ditches are not mapped.! Some areas have desert pavement and are slippery to go up and down. More timid participants on "long" especially, would benefit from a walking stick. The safety bearing is to the NE to Painted Gorge Rd.
