Results for Valentine Score-O at UCSD

Despite the ominous predictions for rain, the weather cooperated to make great conditions for the 2007 Valentine-O. Thanks to everyone who came out
to enjoy the day! Couples, individuals, and many families had a lot of fun exploring the UCSD campus -- a lot of folks enjoyed the garden at the south
end of campus and the new Dr. Seuss statue by the library. With no controls in the woods this year, there was none of the poison oak that
plagued a few orienteers (and the course setter) last year. UCSD's predominantly paved terrain makes it a great place for families, and we had
a number of groups with very young children training the next generation of orienteers. We also got a bunch of first time orienteers who did extremely
well, including Emile Aben in 10th overall with 1180 points. Other great new competitors
included a pair of ultimate frisbee players (one in a clown ballerina costume!) who placed 10th in the group
competition after a 3 hours of running in a team practice in the morning.
Competition was fierce in the individual category, with Josh Williams
edging out his wife Veronica by 50 seconds for the overall win. Other
great moments in orienteering included Polly Lebl avoiding a time penalty
by coming in exactly at her course time limit -- down to the second. Now
that's some mighty impressive time planning! Matej Sebo did a great job
coming in 9th with 1205 points immediately following a second place finish
on the Level 2 course at the Junior Orienteering event.
No orienteering event is possible without many hours of volunteer labor.

David and I were glad to return as meet Co-Directors after a one year
hiatus -- last year we ended up having a baby instead of an orienteering
